Saturday November 22nd
Katherine was home this weekend and wanted to see how things were going on the plot. She was surprised to see how much we'd cleared. Peter came as well and we planted the two gooseberry bushes and the redcurrant bush, albeit rather hurriedly as it was cold and windy. Katherine had wanted to visit a reclamation yard today but I said why not come and visit my own reclamation yard at the back of the plot? She rather fancied the old crock lurking there and proceeded to empty the water from it. We were all bowled over by the foul smell and I was six feet away!! They went to wash it out, and I soon heard loud screams coming from the direction of the river. When I went to see what all the fuss was about, they told me that a long pink slimy thing had appeared dangling from the small hole in the pot. On shaking the pot further, the disembowelled body of a mouse had followed the tail and descended into the river!! Hence the screams. More washing took place before the pot could go into the car. It is now resting happily in Katherine's back garden, and hopefully not providing a home for another mouse.

In my opinion, land girls should not screech at little dead creatures. You must be made of sterner stuff.
Can't wait to sample the Asparagus, it just happens to be my husband's favourite veggie too.
Before the rise of supermarkets I was a greengrocer's daughter, in the days when everyone used their local speciality shop.
I was never allowed to talk to people with allotments who
"grew their own ". It was considered that they were taking away our family profit margins.
Imagine my father's horror when he realised his newly acquired son in law only ate Asparagus. In those days it was £2 per pound which was a lot 35 years ago. He felt his profits were being eaten for free!!
So we can't wait to sample your goodies.
We know you Horticulturalists always grow to much for your own needs so we are happy to help you out with the surplus.
Please just tell me that you don't pee on the compost. I understand that there is evidence to show that this makes the compost more nutritious; something to do with testosterone and oestrogen in the urine. AAaagghhhh
On second thoughts, perhaps I'll buy from Waitrose !! Jo x
