Wednesday 3rd December
Clear blue skies and a sharp frost today. The asparagus plants have gone - presumably John picked up the message and had collected them. Peter came with his tools today and got started on building a frame for the netting. He ordered a coil of blue plastic pipe from the internet and used that to hold the netting in place, and fastened it on to a wooden frame. It looks great. We used it to protect the shallots and garlic, as they've already been nibbled by the rabbits.
I remembered the flask of coffee and the bisuits but forgot the mugs and the sugar so we had to drink out of the empty Actimel cartons we've been saving to use as cane toppers. I must bring down some old mugs and some sugar to leave in the shed.
I continued digging over the earth near the new trees. I was soon too warm and had to shed my jacket and extra gloves. I found yet more asparagus plants and potted them up into some old pots I had found amongst the rubble. While digging around in the debris, I found another old crock (Peter jokes that's me - the old crock!) It may find it's way to Katherine's garden again. No foul smell or dead mice this time. I filled another large bag with rubbish - old pots, a lawn mower grass box, half a wheel barrow, some polystyrene, old seed boxes and a bit off a BBQ. Somebody has been using this as their own private tip!
Peter divided the compost bin in two using an old fence post given to us by our neighbour. He used some of the boards he'd cut down from the sides to finish it off. It's brilliant. Just as we were leaving, the little robin turned up again. Hopefully it was the same one.
