We were out with some friends on Saturday evening and they said they loved fresh beetroot so we promised to give them some. I'm so amazed at how big it's grown, especially when I think of the dry June we had. I picked a dozen large beet to take home and also some more dahlias. The sunflowers are opening up now and growing even taller. We've been down every other day to pick the runner beans. They're growing so fast we can almost watch them grow! We have filled the freezer with beans and given lots away to friends. I've started dreaming about what we're going to do with the rest of them!
I spent a morning making beetroot chutney, using apples, onions and garlic - all home-grown of course. I've also pickled some and cooked some to give to Kirstie. I had a go at making beetroot brownies. A recipe from the internet which satisfies the need for chocolate, but it's not the best Brownie recipe I've ever tasted.
I've continued battling with the weeds but I'm not making much difference. Peter has weed-killed some of the paths and salted around the asparagus which is now surrounded by red clover again. He also pulled up the rest of the onions. I've now tied up some of the raspberry canes which are starting to be threatened by the wind. I'll have to finish weeding in between them next week and mulch them to keep the weeds down.
