Starting the fence

Thursday 15th January
The weather has become much milder again so although it wasn't sunny today, it wasn't cold either. Peter trimmed the rest of the hedge with the chain saw and made a huge pile of branches ready for a bonfire. I'm still taking down compost from home to add to the bean trench, and the ash from the woodstove to add to the compost heap. We took down two more bags of ericaceous compost for the blueberry bed - that should be enough now. I think I'll leave planting the remaining blueberry plants, which are in pots at the moment, until the Spring. It wasn't good weather for digging today, as the soil was sticking to everything. However I managed to persuade another buddlaeia bush to come out - they come out relatively easily as the roots don't go very deep.
Peter tried lighting the fire but it wan't very successful - everything's too damp. We sat and watched the fire slowly die out while we had our coffee in front of the shed.
Peter put two fence posts in near the shed, ready to take a gate, then we used some of the metal fencing which had been left by the previous owners to join the gate post to the hedge at the front of the plot. I worked on threading some fencing in between the hedging at the side to prevent the dogs and deer from getting in. It's looking proper cared for now. As we are a corner plot, there's a large area of hedging to manage. Apparently George planted all the hedging when he first took over the managing of the site some years ago. We need to add some more hedging at the front to complete the hedge, but for now the fencing does the trick. We finished up by collecting lots more rubbish for the tip. This time we emptied a rubber dustbin. It was full of very soggy newspapers - Daily Mails and Expresses dating back to June 05 - which had enormous amouts of mould growing on top. It took me back to the time when I was a girl and was keen on biology. I received a microsope for my birthday one year, and was always looking for interesting things to look at. That mould would have been ideal. I'm always on the look out for useful things while I'm at the tip - this time I found some green plastic covered metal fencing in good condition. It will be ideal for continuing the job of keeping out the animals.
