Snowbound

Monday 9th February

I didn't get down to the plot last week because of the snow, except to take photos. Apparently it's been the worst snow for over twenty years. Of course I don't agree with it being the worst snow - I think it was the best snow. People were out sledging, making snowmen, having snowball fights and just having fun. Most of the school children had at least two days off school. The plot looked incredible against a clear blue sky,and the snow about six inches deep. I found some very large rabbit footprints, but they didn't go very far - probably couldn't find much in the way of food. Surprisingly, the broad beans appear to have survived, cocooned in their cut-down milk bottles. The horse manure has arrived but is now covered in a blanket of snow. We went down again just to off-load some logs. They had been cutting down ash trees in our local park, so we took some to store and keep for either burning on our wood stove or maybe for turning. We did ask for permission, and they told us that as long as we didn't take the wood while they were on site, we could help ourselves. Most people do anyway - without asking! Ash has lovely markings, but it'll need to dry out properly for a couple of years. We re-stacked the wood already stored there and placed it on wooden slats to keep it off the ground.
