Sunday 14th March
I have been growing broad beans on the window-sill in polythene bags - an idea I picked up from the allotment man on Radio 2. Just grow your beans in bags of compost on a sunny window-sill he said, and it worked! The shoots were about 3 inches tall, so I decided it was time to plant them out. There were
lots of gaps where the winter planted beans hadn't made it, so I was able to fill most of them. I did a bit of hoeing around the onions and shallots, and took the netting off the garlic and used it to cover the beans.
I did a bit of of work on the path I had started last year. The board had come loose and floated away in the floods, so I replaced it and laid some old bricks alongside to keep it in place. John stopped by and told me he'd planted his potatoes, and what hard work it was. Mine aren't ready for planting yet - good job as the ground isn't ready yet either.
