Cold frames

Wednesday 11th March
At last - the decorating is finished so I can spend time on the allotment. Another beautiful day. Spring has arrived so it's jumpers off today. Started hoeing the little flower border, but alas the ground is quite wet and very hard work. Decided to finish weeding around the fruit bushes, where the soil seems a little easier to work. There's a lot of very invasive iris-like plants, growing very close to the fruit bushes. Their long roots have snaked right under the fruit bushes so it's difficult to get all the roots out. I've decided to leave a small patch of them to see what they grow into, but most of them will have to go. There are three very large fruit bushes - I still can't tell what kind they are, but I don't think they're gooseberries as they're not spiky. Gooseberries must be spiky as I remember an old rhyme which ended with - 'he fell into a gooseberry bush and scratched out both his eyes.' Whoever thought nursery rhymes were gentle?
Peter joined me today and started to build a cold frame. He has acquired some double glazed windows which will be ideal as they are made from toughened glass. He is building the first frame under the peach tree and using one of peach tree supports to build it up against. He also mended the gate latch which has broken already. All too soon it's time to go - I'd love to stay longer but have probably done enough bending for one day.
