Monday 30th March
A mild day today and the wind has gone. Perfect for planting potatoes. Peter was working on his plot so I went along to give him the money I owed him for the pea sticks. He showed me where he'd planted his potatoes. He said he dug a trench first, put some manure in the bottom and then planted them about one foot apart, with two feet between the rows. I was glad of the advice as I was just about to do the same. I decided to put them in the area in front of the fruit trees. It was already well dug over and partially weeded. I had been afraid that the rotavator would have chopped up the weed roots into little pieces, but I needn't have worried. There were still plenty of big roots left for me to pick out. It was quite hard work so I stopped for a cuppa about half way through. While I was having a break I heard Alan Titchmarsh on the radio talking about the rise in allotmenteering. He said that new allotmenteers who had taken over a very neglected plot, should take the digging SLOWLY. Do 15 minutes and then take a break! If only I'd had that advice earlier.... although I probably wouldn't have taken any notice anyway. I planted three rows of 24 potatoes altogether.
Before I left I wrapped the golden gage tree up cosily in a sheet of polythene, as there's predicted to be another frost tonight.
