Tuesday April 28th
I had an early start yesterday and managed to beat the rain for an hour. I weeded in between the potatoes and earthed up the tender shoots. I'm told they're susceptible to frosts and it's been much colder lately. I also removed the cloche from the corn before the rain came. It was a difficult decision between leaving the cloche on to protect against frost, or taking it off to let the rain water the ground.
It didn't rain a lot yesterday, just enough to wet the ground, but at least it saved me from doing any watering. Actually I've been advised to only water things in when they're first planted and to let them find their own water supply after that.
I planted another dozen strawberry plants which came in the post yesterday, so I've filled in all the gaps where some plants hadn't survived. I also planted a row of Little Gem lettuce and some rocket salad leaves. Yes, I've finally got going with the lettuce planting. I tidied up the edge of the grassy path near the shed. The grass was so long and thick there that it threatened to prevent the sweet peas from growing. I threw the grassy edges into the hole by the bath.
I couldn't resist a look at the robin's nest. They seem to have grown visibly since Sunday - at least their wide-open beaks looked bigger.
