I've been weeding almost every day this week, and apart from the asparagus patch the whole site is looking much better. Sadly the bindweed has returned in force and is using the asparagus fern as a ladder. It all looks very neglected. On the positive side though, Peter is still finding some aparagus to pick. We probably should be doing something else with the remaining spears, like leaving them to grow into ferns, but there's not many experts on site to ask.
Now that the weeds are gone I can see the rows of peas, parsnips and carrots, growing in fine straight lines. There's lots of beetroot ready to pick - I just need to find some tasty new recipes which I can tempt Peter with. Talking about recipes, I brought home a fantastic head of red cabbage today. I looked on the internet under 'red cabbage coleslaw' and it came back with 6,300 entries! I chose one using apple, cider vinegar and horseradish. I've made a batch for the annual street barbecue tomorrow, so I hope it's good.
I lifted the garlic this week, as the stalks had all turned brown. Past experience taught me that if I don't lift them at this stage, I risk losing them as once the stems have died off they're difficult to find. I was a little disappointed at the size they'd grown, but I suppose in view of the lack of rain......... We've had thunderstorms across the country today - especially in the west. Yes, wouldn't you know it, it's Glastonbury weekend! The sky turned very black here, but very little rain fell despite torrential downpours in nearby Bedford.
Kevin has been busy this week - he's located a dustbin for collecting water and also a much larger water tank. We just need to get the pump working now. PETER!!! He's also acquired some netting to protect his remaining broccoli and kale plants.
