Even hotter!

Wednesday. We're having a mini-heat-wave at the moment. I went down early to avoid the worst of the heat, and met up with Francisca who gave me a pot of her lovely local honey. The picture shows the honey next to the biggest sunflower I've ever grown - just to give some idea of the size. You can see some of the hail-damaged leaves in the picture.
I was pleased to see that yesterday's fire had completely burned out, so I started it up again and added some more irises to the pile for burning. Yet more weeding today I'm afraid. I tidied up the edges of the paths, and weeded the rest of the onion bed ready for the green manure to go in.
Thursday. I needed a day off today to sort out the onions and shallots. Many of the shallots had gone to seed earlier in the year and when I came to store them they were hollow at the base and beginning to rot. I managed to remove some good shallots and have pickled some and saved some for storing. Some of the dried out onions are still awaiting stringing, and the more recently pulled ones are lurking in a plastic sack. Oh No!! Horrors await me. They've gone pretty soggy so I've laid them to dry in the shed. Hopefully I have got to them in time. Some of the smaller ones will be pickled. It all takes time - this 'Good Life' stuff. Now I know why Felicty Kendall and Richard Briers were always so exhausted at the end of a satisfying day in the garden. At least I don't keep pigs! Now there's a thought!!!
I made a courgette cake today - Nigella's recipe. More about that later.
