The first BBQ

We had a lovely break away from the allotment, visiting Ian and Jen this weekend. Funnily enough they have their names on a waiting list for an allotment too. They've both just retired so it must be something to do with the time of life.
I spent some time weeding and extending the strawberry patch, and potting up some more runners. Peter picked the French beans and dug up a row of second early potatoes which were surprisingly big. Many have scaly skins though. We've ordered some jute potato sacks to store them in but they haven't arrived yet.
We took down some beefburgers for lunch today and got a little fire going, big enough to cook them on. We cooked a corn cob straight from the plant as well - there's nothing like it. The dahlias are looking superb and I'm picking them every few days. There's enough for me and some to give away as well. Peter was impressed at the size of the squash plant. Of course I'm not sure what to do with it now, or when to pick the squash. I was led to believe they were butternut squash so do I wait until they turn that lovely buttery colour or pick them while they're green? There must be four or five little squash on the plant now.
