Monday. We still have Betty with us so she kept me company today. Lots of pleasant sunshine, although it's beginning to feel like Autumn first thing in the morning. I re-laid the gravel path today. Di was right when she said I should lay polythene first! I had only done half with polythene so all the weeds had come through. I had to take up all the stones and re-lay them. I also replaced the brick edging with polythene-wrapped wood. I re-used the bricks to make a hard standing in front of the compost heap. Last year I found that area became very muddy. The new grass seed has been neglected so I watered that along with the leeks. It's very convenient having the water on the plot but it still takes quite a lot of time.
I was listening to Terry Walton's allotment podcast today. He was saying that your plot should have something edible on it all year round. I'm hoping to have some good leeks, but I fear the brussels sprouts will be a disaster.
The butternut squash are huge and turning buttery coloured now. I picked a couple - one for me and one for the friend who gave me the plant. Apparently all of his plants died, so I'll be pleased to give him one of mine. I picked my first few real carrots of any size today - it's quite exciting pulling them carefully out of the ground and watching the long tapering carrots appear.
Wednesday. I had another go at the strawberry patch today. Thought I would get it all weeded properly and the area extended with the new plants. However, it was a much bigger job than I thought, and I only got about half done. It's back-breaking work too, so an hour and a half was more than enough. I've brought lots of strawberry runners home for re-planting - don't know what I'll do with them all though.
It looks like a rabbit has burrowed through under the fence near the gate so I placed a large rock in the way. I'm sure that won't stop the wily creature though.
