Tuesday December 30th
Peter wanted to go down today to trim the hedge with the chain saw!! It wasn't as easy as he thought as it's been left to grow very tall and straggly. He was soon distracted when John came by to return our pots and stopped for a chat. I was busy removing another buddleia, which turned out to be two very close together. The roots didn't go too deep so I only needed a little help to get them out. We did some more clearing round by the compost bin - there's still lots of rubbish to be removed. Old wood, a plastic container full of glass, bits of metal and a sack full of assorted household rubbish. Peter had another go at trimming the hedge and I raked out the compost bins. I wanted to put a layer of netting on the bottom to deter the rats from coming up through it - a tip from Bernie next door. Bernie was there doing some digging today - he told us he had given one of the fishermen a telling off the other day for letting his dog tear round our plot. I'm hoping to weave a barrier of netting in through the hedge during the winter to help keep out the deer, the dogs and the rabbits. It seems we have had rabbits resident on the plot for sometime, so it seems a bit pointless keeping them out, when they're already in. We discovered a fairly large man-made hole covered with a pallet, and completely overgrown, which may have been used for hiding tools from sight, but was now used by the resident rabbits. Hopefully we'll soon put a stop to that.
