It's a sad day today as I am no longer 'landgirl at 59'. Yes, I had the big birthday last Friday, a great celebration, but unfortunately I've moved into the next decade. Never mind, I actually don't feel any different, surprise, surprise, so will just carry on as before.
Neil and Sorrel brough Imogen down to the plot yesterday, but she'd fallen asleep during our walk through the park to get there. I took a photo anyway just to record the occasion.
I got to work digging and weeding the potato patch for a while, but it was very hard work, as the soil is starting to dry out now. I was hoping to get the potatoes planted today, but really need to do a bit more to the ground first. I've just read on the Gardener's World website that it doesn't always pay to be too hasty with planting the potatoes, or getting the first seeds in. I did a bit of hoeing and raking instead.
I now have my very own primus stove, although I had a little help to get it going today. It was a very windy day, so we positioned the stove just inside the shed door - contrary to all the instructions, and soon had the old kettle whistling. There's something very satisfying about hearing a whistling kettle. Jenny popped round soon after, and we sat round in our very untidy shed and enjoyed her company for half an hour or so.
Peter got the fire going today and I got to work planting the onions. I raked over the soil first, then put in 7 rows of about 20 onions. I've only planted about half of the kilo I bought from George - think I bought too many!! It was starting to rain as we tidied up, so that should water in the onions nicely.
