Getting back to normal

Friday 29th May
I did manage to get down a couple of times last week and do a bit of one-handed weeding, but to be honest, I forgot to make a note of when it was. My finger is improving daily now, and I'm only wearing a bandage for protection, when I'm doing anything physical.
I planted some of the runner beans earlier this week and put the rest in today. I also planted my poor specimens of leeks outside. I've been growing them at home for weeks, but they don't seem to be getting much bigger. They'll just have to sink or swim now in the big wide world. The peas are still lurking underneath the weeds somewhere, so I removed the worst of the weeds to give them a chance. Some of them have been badly eaten, so after cutting down the pea-sticks to a more manageable size, Peter helped me to cover them with netting.
Meanwhile Peter coaxed the lawn-mower into action and cut the grass at the front of the plot and down the paths. The new grass is still too tender to cut yet, but Peter put some new-lawn weed killer on earlier this week. The weeds are already starting to keel over.
A few days ago we discovered that something was eating the redcurrants. One bush was almost stripped, and they aren't even ripe yet! We took action today and covered them with fleece, tied down to wooden stakes. The gooseberries are looking good but will have to wait a while before picking as we're away again next week. We picked more asparagus today - we're really amazed at the length of the season - and also our first broad beans. The're still a little small but I read in Gardener's world that the small ones are good to eat raw in salads. We also picked up a tip about the artichokes which are now producing fruits - fruits, is that the right word? We cut out the centre one to encourage the plants to produce more side 'fruits'.
We noticed that Kevin has been busy this week - the soil is all raked and weed free now in his corner and some plants have appeared. They look like some sort of brassicas and some leeks?
The patch at the bottom which was waiting for the dahlias to go in was covered with weeds again. They all came out easily, so I dug in some manure and planted eight dahlias. All had been doing well in a box at home.
Bernie gave me some cucumber plants today and I intended getting them in too, but after 6 hours and no lunch, I was whacked.
