Wednesday June 10th
We've just come back from 10 days in France - a lovely break, but we paid for it in weeds. I started weeding in between the carrots and parsnips, but the weeds had grown so big it was difficult to get them all out. I had bought a box of French beans in France, so I prepared a piece of ground ready to plant them. I used some of the compost from the compost heap, which looked really good. Just planted three short rows and will plant some more later. I added more soil and manure to the raised bed and planted three cucumber and one squash plant there. Hopefully we'll get some more rain soon as they'll be thirsty plants. I had yet more sunflowers to plant, so put them along the fence, next to Bernie's plot. Some of the ones I planted earlier had died.
The gooseberries are doing well and are almost ready for picking, and the redcurrants under the protective fleece seem to have survived.
Peter joined me later and earthed up the maincrop potatoes - it's a tiring job, so I appreciated the help.
We came home with a lovely box containing asparagus, broad beans, strawberries, artichokes and sweet peas. The sweet peas are a revelation - I haven't grown them successfully before, and the smell is just heavenly. We gave some away to our neighbours who've been looking after the house while we've been away.
