Wild and Windy

Wednesday. It's been very windy for the last few days with today being no exception. However it's also very mild so not too unpleasant. I dug over a patch to plant some more onions. Good job I hand dug it as there were plenty of unwelcome weed roots lurking beneath the soil. John had given me some or his left over red and white onions which I put in this morning. If I end up with too many I can always use them to sell, or for my soup kitchen - there aren't many soups which don't contain onions.
I dug up some parnips and carrots to bring home, and also picked some spinach. One of the parsnips had a very odd shaped root - more like a small swede! I love the smell of the carrots as they come out of the ground - a real fresh smell.
I bought Peter a fig tree as a belated birthday present recently, so I made a start on digging a hole for it. It's only about three feet tall at the moment, but I'm told it will grow massive if I don't contain the roots. I have to line the hole with bricks, apparently, and that should keep it smaller.
I had a call from Peter while I was out this afternoon. Would I like to help dig the hole for the fig tree? He obviously hadn't read the earlier blog! I met him there and we decided on planting it in a different spot, where it would get more sun and wouldn't be in such immediate danger of flooding. Peter re-dug the hole and I found some bricks to line the edges with. We ran out of bricks so finished it with wooden boards. A helping of manure in the bottom mixed with the soil from the hole and it's all ready for .......... oh dear, did we forget to bring the tree? Never mind, next time will do.
